ABOUT
Turtleboy Bio
Turtleboy, comprised of Jonathan Lindhorst on sax, Ryan Butler on guitar, and Adam Miller on drums, was first established in Montreal in the summer of 2007. Inspired by the music of Paul Motian's bassless trio, the three musicians set out to explore this relatively rare musical combination. Turtleboy blends concepts from free-jazz and other parts of the jazz tradition with aspects of indie rock, creating anexperience that is steeped in atmospheric space, loose grooves and intelligent improvised interactions.More often than not, the emphasis is on a group sound and a collective improvisation, rather than any one persons solo, and the band has worked tirelessly to create a seamless blend of total music.Following their first acquaintance in 2007, Turtleboy managed to achieve tremendous success in a short period of time. After performing in Montreal for several months, the group received a Demo Award from FACTOR to record a demo and assemble their first press kit, and in January of 2008, the group wasawarded a Research and Creation grant by the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec to compose, rehearse, and develop new original music. Throughout the spring of 2008 Turtleboy performed regularly in Montreal while honing their repertoire. In June they recorded their debut album and played at the Off Festival De Jazz De Montreal, where they were hailed as a fresh new discovery, and by July 2008Turtleboy was voted the #2 Jazz act in Montreal by The Montreal Mirror Readers Poll.Following their local success, Turtleboy decided to explore artistic endeavors outside of Montreal, and in September 2008, they participated in a 6-week Career Development Residency at the Banff Centre, for which they where the proud recipients of the TD Trust Fellowship Scholarship. During this time they composed and developed new material, as well as performed, recorded and collaborated with a diversity of artists, most notably Juno award winners Roberto Occhipinti and Hilario Duran. In mid November, armed with a newly developed repertoire of music, Turtleboy embarked on a 2-week tour of Canada.Notable performances included The Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club in Calgary, The Yardbird Suite Jazz Festival in Edmonton, and a performance and master-class at St. Francis Xavier University. In January of 2009, Turtleboy officially released their debut album with critical success. Throughout the Winter of 2009, Turtleboy continued to develop more original music and perform throughout Montreal. In the spring they returned to the Banff Centre to participate in the International Workshop in Jazz andCreative Music, directed by Dave Douglas. During this workshop they had the opportunity to work and play with many gifted artists from around the world, including Joshua Redman, Tony Malaby, Marshall Gilkes, and more. They were also prestigiously hand selected by the faculty to open for Grammy nominees Joshua Redman and Dave Douglas at the Eric Harvey Theatre.Currently based out of Brooklyn, NY, Turtleboy has recently completed their second album Smart Matter which has been released on the Vancouver-based Songlines label and is actively looking to tour the album across both Canada and the US, with plans to expand into Europe by 2012.

Turtleboy could easily find themselves at the forefront of contemporary improvised music in the coming years...shows a confidence well beyond their age.-Steve Sladkowski, Spontaneous CombustionRecommended New Release.-David Adler, The New York City Jazz Record (on Smart Matter)Combining the directness and resonance of indie rock with the sophistication and unpredictability of avant garde jazz, Turtleboys Smart Matter transcribes the ideas of Motian for a younger generation. -S. Victor Aaron, Something ElseIts an amazing testament to the power that's generated when the three right people get together. -Daily OMThe musicians interact with a loose yet relaxed confidence yet do so within the self-imposed confines of concise song structures and lengths... If there are elements of free jazz and improv present, they've been integrated into an equally tight and loose group sound that's been honed to what by now appears veritably telepathic.-Textura Melodically inclined but also quite trippy... adeptly straddles a heady jazz/rock intersection, not through searing blues-based guitar licks but more with delicate arpeggios and grindingly hypnotic chordal palettes... For this sophomore offering, Turtleboy do stick their necks out a bit more to reveal a well-developed group dynamic and a heady compositional sophistication.-Elliott Simon, The New York City Jazz Record (Smart Matter Review)Turtleboy is an exciting amalgamation of the Paul Motian Trio, Radiohead, and so much more. This group is on the vanguard of the horn-guitar-drums format and barrelling ahead full speed.”-Dave Douglas – Two-time Grammy-nominated Jazz Trumpeter/Composer“...stripped-down and heartfelt...A fresh new discovery.” -L'off Festival de Jazz a Montreal“Reserved yet hardly restrained, Turtleboy turns on the charm as it brings fresh flavour to a fairly familiar jazz template. Ugly skronk and excessive intracacy are studiously avoided while drummer Adam Miller and guitarist Ryan Butler often play an abstracted rock angle off Jonathan Lindhorst's expressive if trad tenor playing.”- Rupert Bottenberg, Montreal Mirror“...Crosses a number of musical categories, including jazz, rock and others... Because Turtleboy doesn't have a bass player, this gives the music a unique sound and an ability to improvise in ways that might not otherwise exist.”Maria Kotovych, Edmonton VUE Weekly“Steeped in atmospheric space, loose grooves and intelligent improvised interactions... Sounds more mature than you would expect...A unique blend of ambient jazz and progressive rock... an original mix...”- Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal “...A new- but, given their second place ranking in The Best Jazz Act category, consequential band... The result is a gentle yet vibrant sound that spotlights no one player but rather the equitable interactions of all three.”Turtleboy Voted #2 Jazz Act in MontrealRuptert BottenbergMontreal Mirror“They leap right to my pleasure centres all at once – their sound is deeply melodic, structured and disciplined – no extended jams or ponderous time changes here. They get suprising mileage out of their sparse lineup, alternating between sprightly, rhythmically inclined pieces and mood-driven ballads. They exhibit a striking lack of pretension.”-CJLO – Concordia's Underground Radio
